Vitamin C can cause the formation of kidney stones

Vitamin C is considered to be vitamin health, most often it is associated with sunlight and oranges, but the downside of its use can become kidney stones. As it turned out, excessive usage of such nutrients leads to negative consequences. Thus, high doses of vitamin C not only cause the formation of kidney stones, but other health problems.

The risk of kidney stones in men
During the eleven-year study at the Karolinska Institute of Stockholm in Sweden, the data were analyzed for 48 850 men aged 45 to 79 years, among which 436 have developed kidney stones.

The researchers found that men receiving daily high doses (about 1,000 milligrams [mg]) of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), the risk of developing painful kidney stones has doubled. According to scientists, these observations are not applicable for women, because they are not as prone to kidney disease.

At the same time, the authors of the study point to the fact that men who took multivitamins, there was not detected such a high risk of formation of kidney stones. In addition, scientists say that the appearance of stones, called ascorbic acid also depends on the quality and dosage of other nutrients consumed at the same time. Thus, the results of the study can not be regarded as a reason for limiting the consumption of vitamin C.

Vitamin C and the risk of overdose
Vitamin C is water soluble, and this means that it is easily dissolves, does not accumulate in the body and is rapidly excreted in the urine. It is therefore so important its regular consumption. Recommended daily allowance of vitamin C for Nonsmoking female – at least 75 mg and men 90 mg. Smokers should take an additional 35 mg per day.

The tolerable upper level of vitamin C for adults is 2,000 mg, and most people do not exceed this level without experiencing any side effects. However, certain risks exist.

So, some people, taking 500 to 1,000 mg a day, can suffer from excessive flatulence, gastrointestinal disorders, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and increased urination. But there are more serious risks. Here are a few examples.

Problems with the kidneys. In addition to the risk of stone formation observed in the mentioned study, there is a possibility of deterioration of those people who already have certain kidney problems. Supplementation with vitamin C can increase oxalate in the urine, provoke the formation of kidney stones composed of calcium oxalate – the most common type of kidney stones. Oxalates are found in many fruits, vegetables, nuts or chocolate and produced in the liver.
Allergies. Anyone allergic to corn should carefully consider the composition of supplements with vitamin C, most of them do just based on the corn.
Cardiovascular disease in women. Supplementation with vitamin C can be harmful for some women who are postmenopausal and suffering from diabetes mellitus. A study of over 1,900 women who are in menopause and suffering from diabetes, showed that consumption of high doses of vitamin C (greater than 300 mg per day) through supplements, but not food, increases the risk of death from cardiovascular disease. This risk was not seen in women not diabetics.
The blood-thinning effect. High doses of vitamin C can affect the properties of some anticoagulants, such as warfarin. Everyone who had been prescribed these medications for blood thinning should consult with their doctor before taking supplements with vitamin C.
Diabetes. Consumption of high doses of vitamin C affects the glucose (sugar) in the blood of people with diabetes, which leads to the need of intake of antidiabetic drugs. If you have diabetes, be sure to talk with your doctor before taking vitamin C.
Other health condition. Anyone who has the diseases associated with the acid load, such as gout, cirrhosis, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, or renal tubular acidosis should not take large doses of vitamin. But consultation with doctors supplementation with vitamin C is required.
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and a nutrient necessary for numerous body functions including growth and repair of body tissues, absorption of iron, immune system support, wound healing and maintenance of health bones. As an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, this vitamin helps to protect the body from damage from harmful molecules called free radicals, and thus helps to fight the disease.

However, excessive consumption of vitamin C in the form of supplements can be extremely harmful. The healthy way to obtain the optimal dose of vitamin C – through food (include in your diet plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables).
